Devotion to Our Lady of the Forsaken began in Valencia in the early 15th century. Her story is closely linked to a charitable brotherhood created to care for people in need, including the sick and those who had been abandoned.
The original Gothic wooden image became deeply loved by the people of Valencia. It is affectionately known as "La Geperudeta", a Valencian nickname referring to the slight forward tilt of the image's head.
Today, Our Lady of the Forsaken is the patron saint of Valencia. Her Royal Basilica, built between 1652 and 1667 beside the Cathedral, remains one of the city's most cherished places of prayer and devotion.
Protect us, O Lady and our Mother. Watch over our families, our communities, and our world today. Keep wars and discord far from us. Unite divided hearts in the joy of knowing that, with you, they are your children. Grant those who have wealth and power eyes of mercy and open hearts. Give everyone bread, shelter, and a loving home. Grant health to the sick, patience in suffering to those who suffer, comfort to the sorrowful, and hope to those who have lost it. Remove error from our minds and weakness from our hearts. Move sinners to come to their senses, and lead the righteous to greater virtue. May we live singing your praises, and may we go, with your name upon our lips, to behold you in Glory, beside your Son, Jesus Christ, who, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
